How to Sleep with a Bolster Pillow

How to Sleep with a Bolster Pillow

A bolster pillow is a long, usually cylindrical cushion that can support different parts of the body in bed or on a sofa. Unlike a standard pillow, it is often used as an additional support rather than the main cushion beneath the head.

The right position depends on how you sleep and what feels comfortable. A bolster should support the body without forcing the neck, back or joints into an awkward angle.

What Is a Bolster Cushion?

A bolster is made from a shaped foam core, fibre filling or a combination of materials. Foam bolsters hold a clear cylindrical or half-round profile and are available in different diameters and lengths.

They are also used as decorative cushions, arm supports and draught excluders.

What Can a Bolster Be Used For?

  • supporting the knees while lying on the back
  • placing between the knees when side sleeping
  • supporting the ankles or lower legs
  • filling the gap at the edge of a pillow arrangement
  • providing an armrest while reading
  • creating a raised back support on a daybed

Is It Good to Sleep with a Bolster?

Many people find a bolster comfortable because it provides support exactly where it is needed. It should not cause numbness, pain or excessive twisting.

A pillow is a comfort product rather than a medical treatment. Anyone with persistent pain, recent surgery or a diagnosed condition should follow advice from an appropriate healthcare professional.

Are Bolsters Good for the Neck?

A small bolster can support the natural curve of the neck when used carefully, but a large, firm cylinder may lift the head too far. The neck should remain in a comfortable, neutral position.

Some people place a narrow bolster inside the lower edge of a standard pillowcase to add gentle neck support while retaining the softer pillow beneath the head.

Best Sleeping Positions with a Bolster

On Your Back

Place the bolster beneath the knees. This slightly bends the legs and may make the lower back feel more relaxed. The bolster should support both knees evenly.

On Your Side

Position it between the knees and, if long enough, between the lower legs. This can stop the upper leg dropping forwards and twisting the hips.

A longer bolster can also be hugged against the chest to support the upper arm.

During Pregnancy

A bolster may support the bump, back or knees, depending on the sleeping position. Choose a size that can be moved easily and does not restrict getting in or out of bed.

For Reading in Bed

Use the bolster as part of a layered backrest rather than placing it directly behind the lower back with no other support. Make sure the arrangement remains stable.

How to Choose a Bolster Pillow

Consider length, diameter, firmness and cover fabric. A knee bolster can be firmer than a cushion used under the neck. Removable, washable covers are useful because cylindrical cushions are often handled and repositioned.

Foam density and firmness are not the same thing. The finished feel also depends on the diameter and whether the core is wrapped in soft wadding.

Keeping the Bolster Comfortable

Rotate it regularly and follow the cover's care instructions. Do not fold a solid foam cylinder sharply, as this can damage the core.

EasyFoam can cut foam into cylindrical and shaped bolster forms for beds, sofas and upholstery projects. Choose the dimensions around the intended use rather than relying on a single standard size.
